Stop the War meeting and Arran branch
Solidarity with Palestine – Stop the War Meeting
Ormidale Pavilion
Sunday 1st December 2024, 2-4pm
A group on Arran will be holding a public meeting to gauge support to start a Stop the War branch on Arran.
The purpose of the meeting is to share information about the current conflict and to discuss setting up a local group to organise activities on Arran. There will be two guest speakers at the meeting.
Sheridan Waldon said, “Many of us have attended the demonstrations in Glasgow against Israel’s war on Gaza and their illegal occupation of the West Bank. We thought that now was the time to organise more local action against the atrocities we have seen.”
Coll McCail is Stop the War Scotland’s Youth and Student officer who is a student at Glasgow University. He said, “We are committed to supporting Palestinian rights, opposing racism and Islamophobia, and to the defence of civil liberties.” Coll will be speaking about the history of Palestine and the work of Stop the War.
Joining Coll as a speaker will be Katy Clark, regional MSP for the West of Scotland. Katy has a history of being involved in many human rights and civil liberties issues. She has called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urged the UK government to halt arms exports to Israel. She said: “I unequivocally condemn Hamas’s barbaric attacks on October 7, which took many innocent lives. But Israel’s response repeatedly breaching international law with indiscriminate bombing and blockades has created a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, devastating infrastructure and costing tens of thousands of Palestinian lives.”
Both speakers will be taking questions from the audience followed by a discussion about setting up a local group.
Jay Kramer: “I am delighted that we are holding a public meeting to inform ourselves and take action against the genocide that is taking place in Palestine and Lebanon. I am sure I am not alone in feeling powerless to do anything about this horrific situation. After the meeting, I hope there will be regular action on Arran in solidarity with Palestine”
The meeting will be held at the Ormidale Pavilion on Sunday 1st December, 2-4pm. The meeting is open to anyone who wants to find out more about the history of Palestine or would like to get involved in local action to bring about a political settlement in the region.
