…and other events in August

In amongst the big island events of the summer – the Arran Show and the Highland Games – are some other lovely activities that will be taking place across Arran. These are just a few of the many things happening in August…

Things to do with Eco Savvy

Zero Waste Cafe

This month the food team have exciting Zero Waste Cafes planned this month, plus an outdoor cooking workshop at Cordon Community Garden. The Zero Waste Cafes are open to everyone, and operate on a guided donation basis. Each week there’ll be a selection of cakes, warm soup and bread and tea and coffee. The shop selection includes tinned essentials and zero waste dispensers filled with dried goods, and fresh local veggies! Please remember to bring your containers for dried goods.

Join the ZWC on the 17th of August for the outdoor cooking session in conjunction with the Arran Pioneer Project. It will run from 12-2pm. Folk are welcome to join for the duration or just for parts of the session, no booking is required. Around this time of year, expect to be making dishes with courgettes, tatties, kale, tomatoes and herbs!

They’ll also be popping up in Lamlash, Kilmory and Kildonan. See the calendar below for all the ZWC dates!

The Eco Savvy Active Travel team will also be popping up at some of the Zero Waste Cafe’s with E-Bikes for you to try out and a snazzy Bike Decoration Station will be available so you can get creative in decorating your bike! For more active travel sessions see the calendar below.

Pioneer Project

As well as the outdoor cooking session at Cordon Community Garden, the Arran Pioneer Project will be running a Scything Session at Arran Community Land Initiative – Whiting Bay on Thursday August 8th, 10am to 1pm.

Learn all about the benefits of this traditional method of land management with scything expert Ida Fabrizio who will offer tips and tuition to getting the most out of a scythe. We’ll have practice scythes available, but if you’ve got your own, feel free to bring it along.

Please RSVP to arran@pioneerproject.scot to book your place. We will also be at the Arran Show the day before (August 7th) with scythes for quick taster sessions and demonstration.

Over the past year, we have started to reap the rewards of scything, and discovering the benefits of this often overlooked practice as an environmentally friendly and effective alternative to petrol-powered strimmers and mowers:

– Quiet operation – no engine noise and no need for ear protectors.

– Simple use – no complicated assemblies or tiny parts that need replaced.

– Environmentally friendly (and cheaper) – no petrol required.

– Doubles as a great workout and mindfulness exercise.

– A precision tool for conservation and regeneration projects.

Join us in Whiting Bay on August 8th to learn more.
