October

by Judith Baines

II love the vivid, wildness of October and when I made a machined needlelace grid and decorated it with tiny circles of Tenerife lace it said to me: “October”!  The greens tend to be mossy and mustardy and I made a group of various autumn-green stems in coral stitch.  I like using different fancy threads so when I wanted to depict the lichens I just coiled and couched various textured threads down to create them.  The lichens are wonderful here, on Arran, at the moment so keep an eye out for them where ever you go.  The ground cover is glorious at this time of year if it is crunchy fallen leaves, heaps of succulent seaweed or glowing rowan berries like those I found underfoot in the woods that October day in Lincolnshire.
